'Busy weekend' for Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport will see an estimated 420,000 passengers travel through it at the start of the August bank holiday weekend, according to figures from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

The last bank holiday of the year, the final weekend of August is one of the busiest of the year.

John McEwan, chairman of ABTA, said: "Many families see the bank holiday as their last ditch attempt to get a holiday abroad to get some guaranteed sunshine."

Aberdeen Airport car park 'to open in early September'

Passengers travelling from Aberdeen Airport may want to book online car parking to experience new facilities due to be launched next week.

A brand new parking deck is due to open at the start of September which will provide 500 extra short stay spaces over two floors.

The additional car parking spaces are conveniently located close to the terminal.

Stansted Airport staff 'not to strike'

Ground staff at Stansted Airport will not be taking part in strikes this week, according to the travel hub.

An official statement on the airport's website said: "Stansted Airport can confirm that no industrial action is planned by Swissport staff at the airport over the bank holiday weekend."

It added that all flights were expected to operate as normal in this period.

Gatwick predicts 'busy' bank holiday

More than half a million people will use Gatwick Airport over this August's bank holiday weekend, the travel hub has said.

Passengers making their way to Gatwick may want to book airport car parking in advance to avoid queues as on Friday alone there will be around 126,000 people travelling from the airport.

According to officials at the travel hub, Brits are making use of the extra day's holiday to jet off to the sun and escape the wet English weather.

Gatwick Airport workers 'postpone strike'

Passengers travelling from Gatwick Airport this August bank holiday weekend can breathe a sigh of relief after the travel hub confirmed that industrial action will not go ahead.

More than 300 baggage handlers and Swissport ground staff had planned to strike over the holiday weekend.

But today Gatwick Airport's website announced that the planned industrial action by Swissport employees had been "postponed".

Southampton Airport expects '23,000 passengers' this weekend

More than 23,000 people are expected to travel from Southampton Airport this August bank holiday weekend.

Passengers may want to book airport car parking to beat the queues when they arrive at the southern travel hub.

Jan Halliday, director of marketing and communications at Southampton Airport, said: "This weekend is set to be busy for travellers, who will be jetting off to one of 45 destinations".

Heathrow's live-in writer Alain de Botton was regularly asked for directions and information while inside the airport, extracts from his diaries have shown.

Published in the Times, the segments of Mr de Botton's writings showed that the philosopher was often mistaken to be airport staff.

At one point, an irate passenger who had missed her flight, accosted him and banged on his writing desk.

90 years of British Airways flights celebrated

British Airways is celebrating today as it reached a massive nine-decade milestone in its lifespan.

It is exactly 90 years since the airline flew from London to Paris in 1919.

As part of the celebrations, Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 will display a giant crystallised Swarovski Elements Union Jack until September.

Jet2 announces new routes at Newcastle Airport

Newcastle Airport got a boost today when the airline Jet2 announced that it would be launching five new summer routes.

Passengers travelling from the north-east hub will now have even more choice when booking their holiday.

Egypt's popular beach destination Sharm el Sheikh was one of the new routes revealed, alongside Paphos in Cyprus, the Turkish resort Dalaman, Crete and Gran Canaria.

Luton Airport 'may lose EasyJet planes'

EasyJet may move a number of its planes from Luton to Stansted and Gatwick airports, according to a report.

The proposed move follows a dispute between the budget airline and Luton Airport about landing fees, the Daily Mail has claimed.

But Andrew McConnell, spokesman for EasyJet, told the publication that talks were still continuing about the airport costs.

Workers at Stansted Airport vote to strike

Passengers travelling from Stansted Airport this August bank holiday weekend may face disruption as baggage handlers have voted to strike.

This follows the news that Swissport workers at Manchester and Gatwick will also be taking industrial action over the coming weekend.

A spokesperson for the ground staff firm Swissport said it had contingency plans to try to minimise the effect on passengers.
