Leeds/Bradford development gets underwayA development project has begun at Leeds/Bradford Airport which aims to improve a range of passenger facilities, it has been reported.

As part of a £70 million investment by new owners Bridgepoint Capital the initiative will see the introduction of better transport links including an improved car park and terminal frontage.

John Parkin, the airport's chief executive, said: "The growing importance and status of Leeds Bradford International Airport is an essential part of the economic vitality of the region."

Child safety scheme at Bristol AirportBristol Airport has introduced a new child safety initiative to help families during the busy summer holiday rush, the BBC has reported.

Police community support officer Maria Tudgee who works at Bristol Airport developed a scheme which involves parents attaching identity wristbands with contact details to their children in case they get lost or separated.

Ms Tudgee told the BBC: "This scheme will enable us to engage with parents and children as they come through the airport and help them realise how important it is to stay together and not wander off while on holiday."

Good year for Newcastle Airport

Good year for Newcastle AirportNewcastle Airport was pleased to announce that 2007 was a positive year with the airport experiencing record profits and passenger numbers, the Journal has reported.

Financial figures revealed that pre-tax profits increased by nearly 80 per cent in 2007 compared with the previous year, rising from £9.9 million to £17.7 million while passenger numbers increased by 4.1 per cent to 5.7 million.

Graeme Mason, head of planning and corporate affairs at Newcastle Airport, told the Journal: "Last year was our best ever year in terms of passenger numbers and financial performance. There were a number of big landmarks, including the launch of the Emirates service to Dubai and the opening of the new control tower."

Bristol Airport to go greenBristol Airport has unveiled plans to construct a wind turbine between its terminals, the Bristol Evening Post has reported.

The credibility of the 20 metre wind turbine is currently being scrutinised by planning officials but the project is part of a wider environmental initiative by the airport as it plans to expand its operations.

Bristol Airport PR manager James Gore told the Evening Post: "We understand the turbine may not need a planning application, but we're seeking clarification at the moment and hope to install the turbine before the end of 2008."

More domestic flights to Leeds/Bradford AirportAn increasing number of passengers will be able to fly to Leeds/Bradford Airport from the south-west of England, it has been reported.

Air Southwest, which already flies daily to Yorkshire from Plymouth, has announced it will be adding new flight routes to Leeds/Bradford Airport from the start of August in response to customer demand.

Air Southwest deputy chief executive Mike Coombes said: "We have found there is increasing demand for flights to Leeds-Bradford from Plymouth, and these additional services will give added flexibility for business and leisure travellers alike."

BA considers airline mergerBritish Airways has confirmed it is negotiating a possible merger with Iberia, the national airline of Spain, according to reports.

Both airlines are in talks about a move which would have a significant impact on the European aviation industry as it could see the creation of new flights to destinations worldwide.

Fernando Conte, chairman and chief executive of Iberia, said: "A merger would be good news for our customers and enhance our existing relationship. We've worked together for nearly ten years and a tie-up would build on that success."

New hotel at Durham Tees Valley AirportDurham Tees Valley Airport could be home to a new hotel after a planning application was submitted to Darlington Council, the Teeside Evening Gazette has reported.

Developer C J Leonard has handed in a proposal for a 130-bedroom hotel incorporating car parking facilities for 134 cars to be built on the existing Lancaster House site.

Although the hotel will be owned by the luxury chain Hilton it will come under the Hampton brand which offers budget accommodation.

More passengers using East Midlands AirportDespite the current economic climate, passenger numbers are continuing to grow at East Midlands Airport, according to reports.

Figures recently released have revealed that the Castle Donington airport has experienced a rise in the number of passengers for the ninth quarter in a row.

Statistics show that 563,159 passengers used East Midlands Airport last month which is a five per cent rise compared to the previous year while destinations outside the EU saw the biggest jump in passengers with an increase of 17 per cent.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport sees more passengersAn increasing number of passengers used Glasgow Prestwick Airport in June and in the last year of operation, it has been reported.

Scotland's largest commercial airfield recorded a total of 222,940 passengers last month which accounted for a three per cent rise compared to same month last year and a one per cent jump on May.

Chief executive Mark Rodwell said: "This is a strong showing in the current aviation environment and demonstrates how individual airports and airlines can grow against a declining trend."

Luton Aiport launches car share schemeLuton Airport employees are to share their cars as part of an environmentally-friendly initiative, Luton on Sunday has reported.

A new website called londonlutoncarshare.com has been unveiled which is dedicated to encouraging car-sharing between the airport's employees in order to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.

Simon Earles, general manager of corporate social responsibility at Luton Airport, told the publication: "The car share website is just one of many initiatives that form part of the airport's ongoing commitment to improve surface access as set out in our Community Engagement Strategy published in January."
