Flybe 'to become biggest operator at Cardiff'Low-cost carrier Flybe has announced plans to become the biggest operator at Cardiff Airport in three years' time.

The company, which claims to be Europe's biggest low-cost regional airline, has reported strong advance ticket sales at the Welsh capital's airport.

Flybe will serve four new destinations from Cardiff from the end of March – Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey and Newcastle – and the airline expects to sell nearly 300,000 tickets by the end of the year.

Bmi launches to Tel Aviv

Bmi launches to Tel AvivBmi, the second largest airline at Heathrow Airport, has launched its new daily non-stop connection to Tel Aviv, Israel.

The service, which commenced on March 13th, brings the total number of destinations served by bmi from Heathrow this summer to 38.

It has also been coordinated to offer connections with services to and from regional hubs including Manchester Airport, Leeds/Bradford Airport and Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Stansted marks next step in extension

A project currently taking place at the base will add an extra 5,900 square metres of floor space in the international arrivals area by the end of June.

The most recent milestone in the development was the completion of the main structure, roof diagrid and facade glazing stages of construction.

New flights from Cardiff to BarcelonaLow-fares airline bmibaby announced that it is to launch new flights from Cardiff Airport to Barcelona.

The carrier will open the route in May and offer three connections a week, the Western Mail reports.

Cardiff is currently at the centre of expansion plans being launched by bmibaby, which intends to base more aircraft at the Welsh hub in the future.

The Queen to open Terminal 5

The Queen to open Terminal 5Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport will get its official opening today (March 14th), courtesy of Her Majesty the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will be greeted by hundreds of airport and construction workers before meeting Sir Nigel Rudd, chairman of airport operator BAA, at the departures concourse of Terminal 5.

The Queen has a historic association with Heathrow, after opening the airport's first passenger terminal, which is now Terminal 2, in 1955.

More than 240m through UK airports in '07Some 241 million passengers used UK airports in 2007, according to the latest figures.

This represents an increase of 2.4 per cent on 2006, the Civil Aviation Authority statistics reveal, which is slower than the rate of growth seen over the last decade.

There were a total of 2.5 million takeoffs and landings at UK airports last year, 1.8 per cent more than in 2006, with a 2.6 per cent increase in movements recorded at London airports alone.

Govt outlines plans for biometrics at airportsChancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling has announced his first Budget, which included plans to introduce biometric security at airports.

The chancellor said that new measures are set to be introduced using biometric technology at Heathrow Airport and other hubs in order to cut down the amount of time it takes to pass through security checks.

Another aviation-related element of the Budget was an extra ten per cent on plane duty in the new 'tax-per-flight' regime.
