Aer Lingus could boost Belfast with HQ moveShould Belfast International Airport become the site for Aer Lingus' new headquarters, as many as 1,000 new jobs could be created as a result, an MP has stated.

According to Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson, the move to Belfast International Airport would be highly beneficial for the local economy as well as for holidaymakers.

Aside from the 1,000 new positions being opened up in the Northern Irish capital, Aer Lingus would also create 15 new routes across Europe and a re-installation of the Belfast to Heathrow link-up would be established.

Gdansk is new easyJet destination from Edinburgh

Gdansk is new easyJet destination from EdinburghGdansk in the north of Poland is the latest destination to be added to easyJet's burgeoning list of flight options, the budget airline has announced.

Flights will be made available from Edinburgh Airport three times per week and will become available to the public from October 30th.

A total of five services are now available through the budget airline to Poland from Edinburgh airport with the other four being Krakow, Warsaw, Katowice and Poznan.

Ryanair ups its routesA total of three new routes will be added to its existing flight roster at Belfast International Airport by Irish-based budget airline Ryanair, it has emerged.

From October 30th this year, services will begin to be offered to East Midlands, Liverpool Airport and Glasgow Airport from Belfast International Airport.

Ryanair's head of communications, Peter Sherrard said: "Today's new routes include the first Ryanair flights between the UK and the Canary Islands and see the arrival of Europe's lowest fares at George Best Belfast City airport, the 136th airport in the Ryanair network."

Gatwick gearing up for busiest periodBrits are making a last ditch attempt to get some sun out of the summer and as a result, Gatwick Airport is bracing itself for its busiest period of the year at the weekend.

As many as 137,000 passengers are expected to descend upon airport lounges at Gatwick on Sunday July 29th alone with the top destinations proving to be southern Spain and Portugal.

High demand has been reported by British Airways for flights to its French destinations and tour operator First Choice has warned potential holidaymakers that they face "minimal availability" on many flights abroad.

Stranded passengers finally coming home

After spending the past three days waiting in airport lounges in the Canary Islands, hundreds of British passengers are set to head for home today.

A travel company called Seguro Holidays has just one jet and when that suffered technical difficulties, it left over 300 holidaymakers stranded in airport lounges as they waited for the problem to be fixed so they could return to Prestwick Airport from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Due to the firm cancelling flights both to and from Prestwick Airport, more than a 1,000 passengers have been left in limbo and around 330 passengers are believed to have had their money refunded by Seguro after finding their flight from Prestwick cancelled on July 21st.

Coventry Airport to fight expansion blockAn appeal has been launched by Coventry Airport relating to the government's decision to block its plans to expand the site.

Due to the detrimental impact that noise pollution would have on the surrounding area, a public inquiry last month ruled that proposals for expanding Coventry Airport could not go ahead as scheduled.

Commenting on the ruling, Coventry Airport managing director Chris Orphanou remarked: "Our legal team has advised us that the decision is seriously flawed in law. We will be seeking a new inquiry."

Norwich Airport and Flybe at loggerheadsA war of words has erupted between Norwich Airport and budget airline Flybe over the decision of the latter to pull out of offering flights from east Anglia to two Spanish destinations.

The argument centres on claims made by Flybe that the £3 surcharge introduced by Norwich Airport was the main reason underlying the operator's move away from the airport.

However, Richard Jenner, managing director at Norwich Airport, has said that the reason in his opinion as to why the airline has pulled out is that "they haven't been able to get bums on seats".

Jet2 reports surge in salesThe awful summer in the UK has had a beneficial effect on the profit margins of Leeds-based airline Jet2 as Brits flock abroad to catch some sun.

Proving popular is the Canary Islands and Jet2 now offers 26 flights per week to the destination from a range of northern airports such as Leeds Bradford Airport and Manchester Airport.

Sales are currently "above where [Jet 2] anticipated this summer", according to Mandy Round, general manager of Jet2holidays.com and she added that package holidays are the order of the day.
