According to police working at the airport, holidaymakers who have been drinking heavily or are being antisocial could risk missing their flight.

The plans come following an incident onboard a flight heading to Greece, where ten UK passengers were so rowdy they had to be detained by Greek officers when they reached their destination.

Travel writer Jeffrey Mills reported in the Telegraph that the UK houses some of the best lounges to prepare for a long journey with some of them offering facilities such as spas and hairdressing salons.

Those praised by Mr Mills were the First Class Concorde Room lounge at Heathrow Airport for first-class British Airways passengers, the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse - also at Heathrow - and the British Airways Terraces at Gatwick Airport.

UN: Tourism can help developing countriesTourism can play a key role in helping developing countries and can also deliver on the United Nations efforts to deliver sustainable growth.

That is the message from the UN General Assembly, which says its upcoming September meeting on climate change will be a vital forum for ensuring tourism can play a beneficial role in global efforts to go green.

Representatives from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) will meet at the assembly in New York, with assistant secretary-general Geoffrey Lipman saying there was a key role for tourism as a positive agent of change.

The Times reports that as part of a £1.2 billion initiative to improve safety at both airports and ports, passengers could be subject to tighter identity checks.

New figures from internet travel agent directline-holidays.co.uk reveal a staggering 150 per cent increase on summer holiday bookings in 2007, with the majority leaving from Gatwick and Heathrow.

The Association of British Travel Agents said: "Bookings in June and July compared to the same period last year are up by 40 per cent.
