Norwegian service launched from Newcastle

Norwegian service launched from NewcastleEastern Airways launched its first direct international service from Newcastle Airport today (May 12th), to the Norwegian destination of Stavanger.

The carrier will serve the Scandinavian location every weekday from Newcastle.

Stavanger is Norway's fourth largest city and is sharing the position of European Capital of Culture this year with Liverpool and Sandnes.

New long-haul services take off from NewcastleNewcastle Airport played host to the launch of two new long-haul routes from the north-east of England over the bank holiday weekend.

New flights to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Cancun in Mexico took off for the first time on May 4th and 5th respectively.

According to Newcastle Airport, the launches marked the beginning of its summer season.

Air Southwest launches Newcastle services

Air Southwest launches Newcastle servicesRegional airline Air Southwest has launched services connecting Plymouth and Cornwall in south-west England with Newcastle in the north-east.

A lookalike of Francis Drake, the most famous historical figure associated with Plymouth, landed at Newcastle Airport on the inaugural flight and was greeted by airport representative Chris Sanders.

Mike Coombes, deputy chief executive of Air Southwest, who also boarded the first flight between Plymouth and Newcastle, said he was confident that the economy in the north-east will benefit from a boost in business and leisure passengers.

Newcastle offers flights to NorwayA daily direct flight between Newcastle and Stavanger in Norway will be offered that will help business travellers and trade between the two regions, it has been claimed.

Eastern Airways currently runs flights between the two airports via Aberdeen and will begin using the new route on May 12th.

Flight times will be cut in half to about an hour between the two destinations and will help the north-east's oil and gas supply sector, which has seen an increase in demand from Norwegian clients.

Cimber Air added three extra flights a week from Newcastle to the Danish capital of Copenhagen from April 2nd, bringing the total number of weekly scheduled connections to ten.

Copenhagen is one of the many cities in central Europe and Scandinavia, along with the likes of Krakow, Stockholm and Prague, that is popular with Brits on city breaks.

Eastern Airways 'most punctual at Newcastle, Birmingham'Regional carrier Eastern Airways has been named the most punctual scheduled airline departing from Newcastle Airport and Birmingham Airport, it has been announced.

Online aviation analysts Flightontime.info, using data from the Civil Aviation Authority, named Eastern Airways the most punctual operator at Newcastle for the second year running ahead of airlines including British Airways, Ryanair, flybe and easyJet.

Some 92 per cent of the regional carrier's flights from Birmingham left within 15 minutes of their scheduled time and 90 per cent of its services at Newcastle were similarly prompt.

The very first Eagle Bar Diner outside of London opened at Newcastle earlier this month.

Dave Laws, the chief executive of the airport, and Nicholas O'Dwyer, the man behind the Eagle Bar concept, were among those present at the opening of the new bar and eatery.

Newcastle Airport boss stresses regional responsibilityThe head of Newcastle Airport has said that expanding air hubs must have wider concerns than their own growth and success, as they have a responsibility to their region.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, Newcastle Airport chief executive Dave Laws said it was important that new services were only accepted from carriers that are able to deliver a strong service to the area.

"Our targets have to be sustainable. Decisions will be taken, based on what we feel is right for the region. If we start a new route and, 12 months later, it closes then we are letting people down," he said.

Eastern Airways launches new routes from NewcastleRegional carrier Eastern Airways has announced new services and extra seat capacity from Newcastle Airport.

On March 3rd, the airline increased its flights to Aberdeen Airport from five to six every weekday, while frequency on its route to Southampton was boosted from three to four a day.

Three new flights every weekday will be launched to Cardiff Airport from April 7th, along with two services a day to Stavanger in Norway.

In addition to this route, which will open on March 30th, the carrier will commence flights from Newcastle to Aberdeen Airport on the same date and from the north-east to Rennes in France on May 24th.

Flybe described the connection between Newcastle and Gatwick Airport as a "key business route" and said that it will be opening a new business-class lounge at the north-east hub.

Dubai-Newcastle route 'boosting interest in north-east'Travellers from Australasia are showing a growing interest in England's north-east, which is supported by a recently launched air route from Dubai to Newcastle Airport, according to the region's development agency.

One NorthEast said that Australia and New Zealand were identified as key markets following the commencement of a daily Emirates flight between Dubai and Newcastle last September.

This was followed by the introduction of two new websites targeted at travellers in Australasia, which have attracted 60,000 unique visitors, half of whom have requested further information on the north-east.

According to reports large bases like Heathrow are not as popular as smaller, regional hubs, but James Fremantle disagreed with the idea that this has been a factor in the expansion of local airports.

Dubai-based airline brands Newcastle control towerEmirates airline has built and branded a colossal new air traffic control tower at Newcastle Airport, marking the start of flights between the northern travel hub and Dubai, capital of United Arab Emirates.

Towering above the northern city at double the stature of sculptor Antony Gormley's famous Angel of the North statue, the newest air traffic control centre in the UK cost £8.2 million to create.

The older, 40-year-old tower was demolished and replaced with this new landmark, equipped with high-tech technologies for plane orientation.

The proposals could see the busy centre employing green policies in order to combat climate change and reduce its carbon footprint.

As part of the plans, officials at Newcastle will log the total carbon emissions created by carbon emissions by all its incoming and outgoing transport including ground operations, passengers' transport and aircraft arrivals and departures.

Security stepped up at north-east airportsSecurity has been stepped up at both Newcastle Airport and Durham Tees Valley Airport, after the car bomb attack on Glasgow Airport at the weekend, reports The Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

Similarly to airports across Britain, armed police presence has been increased at both sites, following the latest in a series of car bomb attacks in the UK.

Two failed car bomb attempts occurred in central London prior to the Glasgow Airport strike and so far eight men – two of them believed to be doctors - have been arrested in connection with the suspected terrorist attacks.
