Luton passengers paying for airport security

Passengers at Luton Airport are being forced to pay £1 for the clear plastic bags that are now required to take liquids through the security checks.

Holidaymakers, who must use the officially approved bags to proceed through passport control, have to buy a £1 capsule containing four bags from a dispenser, even though each person is only allowed to carry one such bag on board.

If they reach security with a bag that is too big, not resealable, or opaque, they could be turned away and have to queue up all over again - something which the BAA estimates could take more than an hour at busy airports like Stansted and Heathrow during peak times in the summer.

Luton Airport expansion plans shelved

Expansion plans at Luton Airport have been shelved because of the high cost of building a new runway.

The major expansion development, which included a 950-metre replacement runway and new terminal building, will not be taking place anytime soon as planned.

TBI, which operates Luton Airport, is set to review plans and publish new framework proposals later this year to develop the site by 2015.

Wizz Air unveils new UK ? Wroclaw routes

Polish low-cost carrier Wizz Air has announced the launch of new routes from Wroclaw to Luton Airport and Doncaster/Sheffield Airport.

Wizz Air's plans follow the recent development in Poznan, where it has established its seventh operating base.

The new flights to Luton Airport will get underway in February next year, with regular one-way fares starting at just £19.99.

Airport ATMs to dish out foreign money

The flying experience at London's major airports is set to be enhanced further, with the addition of new cash machines that dispense foreign currency, the Times reveals.

Many flyers will no longer be forced to face arduous queues at bureau de change in order to obtain their international travel money.

Euros and Dollars will be available at the ATMs at the same exchange rate as the bureau, but unlike many of the booths, will be on hand 24 hours a day. As well as this, commission will not be charged by the machine operators.

May proves to be a busy month for easyJet

Low-cost airline easyJet has revealed that passenger numbers were up last month, with the budget carrier reporting a 13.8 per cent gain in traffic.

The airline, which is based at Luton Airport, revealed that it carried 3.3 million passengers in May, compared with 2.9 million a year ago.

Revenue was also up by 15.2 per cent to £1.7 billion for the past 12 months ending in May.

Training college for Luton Airport staff unveiled

Luton Airport received a boost this week when a new £120,000 training facility was approved by the government.

The Learning and Skills Council gave its backing to the centre, which will be run by Luton's Barnfield College.

Airline and airport staff working at Luton Airport will be able to receive training at the facility 24 hours a day, in a bid to meet varying shift patterns.

More and more of the UK's business travellers are choosing to fly from smaller regional airports, according to recent reports.

After the latest traffic statistics revealed that traffic was down slightly at Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport last month, it seems growth at the UK's smaller airports is improving.

And the Evening Standard revealed that traffic at smaller London airports, including Luton Airport, was on the rise.
