'No doubt' that regional airports will thriveOne of the bosses of Leeds/Bradford Airport has claimed there is absolutely no doubt that regional hubs around the UK are set to continue to grow and rise in popularity.

Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at the airport, said that regional bases are beginning to offer competition to traditionally dominant London hubs such as Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport.

"As [regional] airports introduce more destinations and more choice with a wider number of scheduled airlines, there is now less need for people to trawl down to London to connect to flights worldwide," he said.

Thomas Cook takes off from LeedsLeeds/Bradford Airport has presented regional travellers with a number of new holiday opportunities this month with the launch of new services from Thomas Cook Airlines.

The operator commenced a range of new operations from the Yorkshire base on May 1st, boosting its capacity for the summer season by 20 per cent.

Travellers using the airport hotels at Leeds/Bradford will be able to catch Thomas Cook flights to holiday destinations in mainland Spain, the Balearic islands, Greece, Malta, Portugal and others.

Goldtrail Holidays, which specialises in offering services to the country, has announced that it will be providing new flights from the Yorkshire hub to Bodrum and Dalaman during the summer.

Leeds/Bradford gets connection to PakistanLeeds/Bradford Airport will see a boost to its long-haul network next month when the first non-stop flights between the Yorkshire region and Islamabad, Pakistan are launched.

Two services a week will be offered by Shaheen Air International, commencing on February 7th.

Shaheen Air was designated the second national carrier of Pakistan in October 2007 and operates 15 domestic and international routes.

These new services will be offered in addition to Thomas Cook's routes from the Yorkshire airport for summer 2008, to destinations including the Algarve and Turkey.

The low-cost airline's route from Leeds to the Irish city was launched in 1996, with 70,000 passengers using the connection in the first year.

Since then Ryanair has undergone substantial growth to the point that it expects to carry over 300,000 passengers at Leeds/Bradford this year.

The consortium of five west Yorkshire authorities agreed to sell their 100 per cent controlling stake in the airport earlier this year and now Bridgepoint has earmarked a £70 million investment to develop the site.
