Flights launched between Blackpool and Belfast City airportsTwice daily flights are to be launched in July between Blackpool Airport and Belfast City Airport.

The service by airline Manx2.com will operate Monday to Saturday and run a morning and afternoon flight.

It is hoped that the additional services will attract more commuters to use the service.

Improvements start at Blackpool AirportWork on a major investment to improve Blackpool Airport is up and running, officials have announced.

Balfour Beatty, which owns the airport, has invested £2.5 million into boosting its performance and appearance both inside and out.

New runway surface covering more than 250,000 square feet is being laid at a cost of around £1 million, with the rest of the money being used to update various facilities.

Blackpool Airport housing plan rejectedPlans to build low-cost housing at Blackpool Airport have been rejected by the local council, it has been reported.

The scheme proposed 46 apartments and 26 houses on land at Westgate Road, Squires Gate.

Local councillors voted three to one against the airport development, which was to be headed by MAR properties.

Flights from Ireland to Blackpool AirportA regional airline has announced a new route from Ireland to one of England's most popular tourist destinations.

Irish firm Aer Arann is to begin flying between Blackpool Airport and Dublin from January 5th 2009.

The carrier's chief executive officer designate Paul Schutz said: "The strength of Aer Arann is our ability, as people become more discerning about how they spend their money on air travel, to provide easy and direct access to regional airports with a desirable high-quality product at affordable prices.

Free parking introduced at Blackpool Airport

Free parking introduced at Blackpool AirportPassengers flying from Blackpool next year will be able to take advantage of free airport parking facilities.

Bosses at the northern gateway announced that from January 5th 2009, people using Blackpool Airport will be able to park their car free of charge for up to 15 days as part of an initiative which aims to attract more passengers to the hub.

The airport parking scheme will be funded by the introduction of a £10 Airport Development Fee (ADF) payable at the hub for all departing passengers aged over 16.

The Aero GP air racing event will take place on June 28th and 29th.

Blackpool to host new ski servicesLow cost airline Jet2.com has announced that it will offer flights from Blackpool Airport to the ski capital of Geneva in Switzerland next winter.

Communications manager at the airport Susan Kendrick said that there was a large demand for flights to the French and Swiss Alps "from residents across Lancashire and Cumbria", adding that the carrier was confident that the flights would be popular from the offset.

The flights will start weekly, with the first journey beginning on December 13th this year and running throughout the ski season until April.

Blackpool Airport goes smoke-freePassengers flying out of Blackpool Airport were forced to stub out their cigarettes on Friday after staff announced that the building was going smoke-free.

Exactly a month before the introduction of the nationwide smoking ban, which will see people forbidden from lighting up in all public enclosed places, smoking at Blackpool's Terminal building has now come to an end.

Staff spent the weeks before the introduction date ensuring no-smoking signs were on full view to remind passengers of the airport's new status.
