Heathrow Airport parking boosted by new gadgetA new piece of technology is set to improve Heathrow Airport parking facilities by helping returning travellers to find their cars.

The gadget, developed by Siemens, will scan the numberplates of cars as they enter parking areas and print out a ticket bearing the vehicle's details.

Travellers will then enter their ticket into a machine on their return and be given directions to their car.

Further growth for regional airports in 2006The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published its 2006 air passenger survey, revealing that 98 million passengers flew from regional airports last year, up from 95 million in 2005.

London's airports handled 137 million customers in 2006, compared to 132 million the previous year.

The most popular destination from the capital's hubs was Dublin, followed by Edinburgh Airport, New York JFK, Malaga and Amsterdam.

Hero taxi driver has parking ticket cancelledAn industrious taxi driver who helped take on terrors suspects at Glasgow Airport last weekend has had a parking ticket he was given waived.

Alex McIlveen, 45, who left his taxi at the airport after two men with gas canisters drove into the Terminal One at Glasgow Airport, found he had been given a £30 parking ticket when he returned to his car after police questioning the next morning.

While police initially said that the father of two would have to pay the fine, a call from Scottish newspaper the Daily Record helped persuade the fine to be dropped.

Airport car park developers apply for planning permissionDevelopers hoping to build a new airport parking facility for Bristol Airport have applied for planning permission to turn a nearby mushroom farm in Langford into a park and ride facility.

Bristol Park and Fly has applied to turn land at Monaghan's Mushroom Farm into airport parking with a capacity of 1,200 spaces.

However, members of the Churchill and Langford parish council have called for authorities to take a cautious approach towards the new project's application. Valerie Langley, a parish councillor, told the Weston and Somerset Mercury: "There should be more control on issues like this through the local authority."

AFX News revealed yesterday that unions were set to take industrial action in a dispute over proposed new legislation, which will allow private investors to stake financial claims in airports.
