Hairspray named best musical

Hairspray named best musicalWest End show Hairspray, which is currently showing at the Shaftesbury Theatre, was named the best musical at the recent Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

The production, which has been brought to London following its successful run on Broadway, took the award ahead of stiff competition in the form of Parade and Fiddler on the Roof.

Hairspray features a number of top names from British entertainment, including Michael Ball, who plays Edna Turnblad, the mother of the main character, and Mel Smith as Wilbur Turnblad, the father of the family.

The story, which was originally brought to life as a film starring Ricki Lake, involves American teenager Tracy Turnblad and her ambition to become a dancer, which she gets the chance to fulfil when she wins a spot on a local television show.

While Hairspray won out in the musical category of the Evening Standard awards, the biggest winner of the night was the latest production of Macbeth starring Patrick Stewart.

Stewart won the best actor award for his depiction of the eponymous thane, while Rupert Goold took the accolade for best director.
