BAA to install new X-ray machines

BAA to install new X-ray machinesGatwick Airport and the rest of BAA's seven UK hubs will be fitted with new X-ray machines next year.

Following successful tests at Glasgow Airport, the Advanced Threat Identification X-ray devices will be installed at all of BAA's passenger facilities from March 2008, including Heathrow's new Terminal 5.

The new technology, developed by Smiths Detection, is taking over from existing X-ray machines owing to its ability to automatically identify explosives and liquids.

A new system will also be introduced whereby regular bags are sent through security with greater speed and suspicious packages are diverted down a separate channel, which is hoped to reduce queues.

BAA director of security Ian Hutcheson said: "This strategic partnership with Smiths Detection is a groundbreaking agreement which will lead to enhanced security standards at all BAA airports.

"The contract will enable us to work in collaboration with Smiths Detection to ensure continuous improvement in screening systems, including the application of the very latest technologies."

Mr Hutcheson referred to the use of the new systems at Terminal 5, saying it is indicative of the new facility's ambition to keep "the passenger in mind".
