Aviation's cons 'must be balanced with pros'

Aviation's cons 'must be balanced with pros'While the aviation industry has become something of a scapegoat in the ongoing debate over climate change, it is important to keep in mind the significant benefits that an expanding air transport industry offers, it has been argued.

Simon McNamara, general manager for infrastructure and environment at the European Regions Airline Association (ERA), said that the high profile nature of the aviation market means that it attracts a lot of criticism.

"Air transport is a very headline grabbing form of transport," he said.

"The reality is that within the EU we generate about 1.5 per cent of the total CO2 emissions."

Mr McNamara stressed that as much effort as possible should be made to reduce emissions but said that there is no need to "get hysterical about trying to close down air transport".

"You have to balance the effect we have on the environment with the social and economic advantages we bring to people in life," he said.
