Further growth for regional airports in 2006

Further growth for regional airports in 2006The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published its 2006 air passenger survey, revealing that 98 million passengers flew from regional airports last year, up from 95 million in 2005.

London's airports handled 137 million customers in 2006, compared to 132 million the previous year.

The most popular destination from the capital's hubs was Dublin, followed by Edinburgh Airport, New York JFK, Malaga and Amsterdam.

Leisure passengers accounted for 88 per cent of travellers at Nottingham East Midlands Airport, making it the most popular hub for these customers, followed by Londonderry (83 per cent), Gatwick Airport (83 per cent) and Stansted (82 per cent).

Across all of the regional airports surveyed, the Spanish destinations of Palma, Alicante and Malaga were the most popular locations with leisure travellers, while Orlando was the top long-haul journey.

The importance of good airport parking was illustrated by the survey findings, with private cars found to be the most popular method of transport to the bases in the survey.

Over 200,000 people at 11 UK air hubs were questioned about their travel patterns for the CAA survey, which will be used to inform airlines, airport operators and the government.
