Stansted protests attract celebrity interest
Protests over potential expansions at Stansted Airport have been joined by author and newspaper columnist Will Self. The writer took part in a 'runway ramble' at Hatfield Forest that was organised by campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion.
Discussing his reasons for taking part in the walk, which is now in its sixth year, Mr Self said that the world is "humanity's backyard" and should be left in its natural state.
He also dismissed any suggestions that the protests against Stansted's expansion were part of modern society's 'Nimby' (not in my backyard) phenomenon.
"For me the right to roam and the responsibility to adopt a more harmonious and sustainable lifestyle are one and the same," Mr Self added. "That's why I joined the ramble."
BAA is set to make a planning application for a second runway to be built at Stansted Airport later this year, with a public consultation expected to follow.
A separate inquiry concerning the airport operator's plans to raise the current passenger limit at Stansted is due to conclude on October 19th.
