Sat nav doesn't know way to Cardiff Airport, drivers told

Sat nav doesn't know way to Cardiff Airport, drivers toldDrivers trying to get to Cardiff Airport are being warned to ignore the directions their satellite navigation (sat nav) systems give them.

The cutting-edge devices claim the Welsh village of St Hilary, in the Vale of Glamorgan, is a shortcut between the M4 and the airport.

As a result, the village has suffered severe traffic congestion as trucks carrying freight to the airport power through its narrow streets.

But local authorities have now erected a series of prominent 'anti-sat-nav' signs, telling drivers to ignore their navigational systems' advice.

The signs show a truck and sat-nav tool with a large red line through them, and an arrow pointing in the direction of the real route.

"We have had a series of problems with drivers getting into trouble by trusting their satnavs and we needed to do something about it," local traffic engineer Mark Simpson told press.

"They can send drivers on the most direct routes which turn out to be narrow roads completely unsuitable for heavy and long trucks and lorries," he added.

Cardiff Airport is a passenger hub as well as an industrial centre, processing over a million passengers annually.
