Comic plays cross-dresser in All About My Mother

Comic plays cross-dresser in All About My MotherA stage adaptation of All About My Mother, a critically-acclaimed 1999 film from Pedro Almodovar, director of Bad Education, Talk to Her and Volver, will open at the Old Vic theatre as the Bank Holiday weekend draws to a close.

The curtain will rise on the show, staged at Kevin Spacey's Old Vic, on August 27th.

In the past, the possessive Almodovar has resisted adaptations of his work, but his production company, El Deseo (Desire) agreed to this version on condition that the creative talents involved experimented with new angles instead of trying to ape the screen version.

The role of the transsexual prostitute Agrado will be played by Mark Gatiss, star of The League of Gentlemen, a series which required a relish for cross-dressing.

With typically scrupulous attention to detail, Almodovar, who has kept an eye on the production from afar, intervened to instruct the actor to shed pounds for the role, Gatiss told the Guardian.

The Old Vic theatre has attracted heightened attention in recent years after Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey took the helm as artistic director, and the box office will expect theatre tickets for this production to sell fast.
