Community-minded travel firms lauded

Community-minded travel firms laudedConde Nast traveller has unveiled the winners of its 'World Savers Awards', which recognise travel companies delivering the most outstanding overseas experiences to customers concerned about their carbon footprint and impact on communities.

Although passengers flock to airports such as Bristol Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Heathrow each year, many are still concerned about green issues and reducing their carbon footprint.

Of 71 hotels, resorts, airlines and travel operators considered, among the stand-out best were Marriott Hotels, applauded for achieving a 70,000-tonne reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the last year and conducting waiter-training programmes for underprivileged children in countries including Romania, where orphanages represent a grave social problem.

The Jungle Bay resort and spa on the Caribbean island of Dominica, meanwhile, was commended for its commitment to buying all the fish and produce it feeds guests locally.

Finally, the top global destination, sure to soar in popularity thanks to the award, was the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in South Africa, where guests can stay in a lodge and private villa while species are reintroduced into the wild and families who had been cattle farmers are retrained in better-paid tourism work.

The thirteenth annual ecotourism awards recognise achievements in initiatives in education, health, poverty relief, wildlife conservation, and cultural and environmental preservation.
