Passengers flood through Heathrow in spite of camp
Travel agents remain defiant in the face of the climate change camp aiming to paralyse operations at Heathrow Airport. Despite the scale of the Camp for Climate Change protest, with around 1,500 demonstrators expected mid-week to protest against the creation of a fifth terminal at Heathrow, agents remained optimistic about Britons' intent to travel.
With 2,500 support security staff and 1,800 police brought in to help manage the protests, Heathrow remains functional.
Downing Street this week described any disruption to services at the airport as "unacceptable".
Given the appalling run of weather marring the British summer, it appears that holidaymakers are determined to flee overseas whatever the inconvenience.
"None of our customers has mentioned the protests," Anthony Goord, owner of Peter Goord Travel in Plymouth, told Travel Weekly.
It is estimated that 1.5 million passengers will travel through the airport while the camp is in operation.
Demonstrators' activities are expected to peak with a 24-hour mass protest, whose content has not yet been clarified, from midday on August 19th.
