Seaplane to link Glasgow to islands, Highlands

Seaplane to link Glasgow to islands, HighlandsThe range of transportation options for travellers outbound from Glasgow is set to multiply as the city welcomes the first seaplane port located in a European city centre.

Loch Lomond Seaplanes will begin to operate from the port on August 20th, with prices to the inaugural destination of Oban, which leads to the Western Isles, starting at £140 return.

Faster travel to Highlands locations would also open out the wilds of Scotland to Glaswegians and other tourists venturing onward from Scotland's second city.

Although confirmation for these routes is still pending, the islands of Mull and Skye, both immortalised in popular song, could also be served from the Glasgow hub.

The romanticism of travel by seaplane owes much to the vehicle's historic associations for local residents, some of whom may remember when the River Clyde last hosted seaplanes 63 years ago.

The intimacy of the travel experience could prove a draw, too, with a cosy nine-seat seaplane the first craft to tackle the new routes.
