Hand luggage rules 'could be relaxed'

Hand luggage rules 'could be relaxed'Rules on passengers flying out of UK airports carrying just one bag as hand luggage could be relaxed, it has been revealed.

Tight security has meant that anyone flying abroad must carry just one, small bag in the cabin and put all other luggage in the hold.

Speaking to the Financial Times, aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick said that the rules could be changed by November in a move that would cut check-in delays at busy times.

The new rules would allow people to carry up to two bags with them onboard the flight – but they would still not be permitted to take on liquids.

"If [BAA] can get the throughput without reducing the levels of safety and security, then we'll lift the one-bag rule without any problem, provided we're convinced and they're convinced," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

Despite the tight restrictions, airport operator BAA announced its busiest month ever in July, with millions flying out of the UK to escape the grim weather.

The firm's seven airports saw 15 million through its doors last month, despite criticism at many hubs of overcrowding and baggage-handling problems.
