BAA wins Heathrow protest injunction

BAA wins Heathrow protest injunctionAirport operator BAA has won an injunction preventing environmental protesters from campaigning at Heathrow Airport later this month.

The firm went to the high court to restrict protestors gathering at a 'Climate Action' camp organised by environmental group AirportWatch.

Although the peaceful protestors will not be banned from attending the event from August 14th to 21st, Justice Caroline Swift insisted that those who aimed to cause disruption would not be allowed to enter the area.

Although the injunction is much less far-reaching than BAA had originally hoped, a number of individuals will be banned from the protest including Joss Garman and Leo Murray of activist group Plane Stupid.

BAA claimed that the protest could put the public in danger as terrorists could take advantage of the protests to target the hub.

Ms Swift said: "The purpose of the injunction is to enable the airport to continue to function and to permit those responsible for security at the airport and elsewhere to focus on their prime concern of protecting the public from the risk of terrorist attack."

London mayor Ken Livingstone has criticised BAA for trying to prevent peaceful groups such as the RSPB and Greenpeace from meeting at the protest.
