Newcastle Airport goes green

Newcastle Airport goes greenPlans for Newcastle Airport could see it become one of the most environmentally-friendly in Europe, it has been reported.

The proposals could see the busy centre employing green policies in order to combat climate change and reduce its carbon footprint.

As part of the plans, officials at Newcastle will log the total carbon emissions created by carbon emissions by all its incoming and outgoing transport including ground operations, passengers' transport and aircraft arrivals and departures.

The airport hopes to use the figures recorded to reduce the impact it has on the atmosphere and offset any thing it cannot reduce.

Outlined in the Newcastle International Airport Climate Change Policy, the airport's board finally approved the proposals which will also include injecting cash into the local area to improve the environment.

Airport head of planning and corporate affairs Graeme Mason told local paper The Journal: "Our aim is to become known as one of Europe's greenest airports.

"We want to put ourselves ahead of other airports and we believe that our climate change policy will not only do that, but will complement the economic benefit that the airport brings by channelling resources into reducing the region's carbon footprint."
