BAA passenger numbers down for June
The recent terror scare at Glasgow Airport saw BAA's passenger numbers dip in June by 0.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.In total, BAA's UK airports dealt with around 13.8 million flyers in the month, with European scheduled traffic up 0.8 per cent.
However, European charter traffic fell by 7.2 per cent for the month, along with domestic and Irish Republic traffic, which dropped by 3.7 per cent and 4.2 per cent respectively.
"The recent attempted terrorist attack at Glasgow contributed to a fall of 2.4 per cent as over 60 per cent of flights were cancelled or diverted when the airport was temporarily closed in the immediate aftermath of the incident," a BAA statement read.
"Less than 24 hours after the incident the airport was reopened and operating a full flight schedule."
There was good news for Gatwick Airport, which saw passenger levels rise by 1.3 per cent, but Heathrow Airport and Stansted Airport boasted less impressive returns - 1.8 and 1.9 per cent falls respectively.
Southampton Airport saw traffic dip too by 1.3 per cent, while Aberdeen Airport and Edinburgh Airport proudly presented positive gains of 7.5 per cent and 3.6 per cent.
