Airport closure alert for Irish flyers

Airport closure alert for Irish flyersThe City of Derry Airport has been temporarily closed down by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) over safety issues.

Following a recent inspection, the CAA has opted to provisionally suspend the airport's licence because concerns were raised over such problems as poor runway drainage and ineffective bird control plans.

UK and Irish flyers will undoubtedly be affected by the news, with routes including Bristol Airport, Dublin Airport, Nottingham/East Midlands Airport, Prestwick Airport, Liverpool Airport and Stansted Airport.

British Airways revealed that it has rescheduled flights to Belfast International Airport, with coach transfers available for some flyers.

Belfast International Airport is around 60 miles away from Derry and flyers might want to consider airport hotels and airport parking areas as a resource to support their travels plans.

The airport's management revealed in a statement they were "100 per cent committed to maintaining the highest safety standards".

"While this an exceptional step by the CAA, the airport is confident that a position can be reached to ensure it is operational as soon as possible.

"The public will be advised immediately of any update and it is understood airlines will provide further updates on Friday."
