Southampton Airport could have Olympic role

Southampton Airport is hoping to play an important role in the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be primarily held in London.

With five sporting locations in the local area being mooted as possible training camps for competing athletes during and in the build up to the games, the airport could find itself playing an important part in seeing that many competitors receive a smooth entry to the UK.

Airport director of communications Jan Halliday is quoted in the Southern Daily Echo as saying: "The airport will be pushing to have a role. We have very easy access to London and the training camps in the area."

She pointed out that the airport may be able to more easily accommodate chartered flights than some of its counterparts.

The BAA is known to be looking at ways in which each of its airports can enjoy some involvement in the Olympics.
