New car park charging at Belfast International
Belfast International Airport is to see a new charging structure for its short-term car parking, it has been announced.
From Thursday the short-stay facility, previously free for users over the first ten minutes of their stay, will charge £1.00 for half-an-hour of parking.
This is a change from the previous system, which saw a charge of £1.50 per half hour after the initial free ten minutes.
John Doran, managing director of the airport, told the Belfast Telegraph of the rationale behind the charges.
He said: "We have been monitoring the situation for some months and the vast majority of people using the free ten minutes are actually incurring unnecessary charges by straying over the ten minutes when they park.
"We've decided to make the charging clear for customers and so those parking here will pay £1 for the first half-an-hour instead of £1.50 for the 20 minutes following the free period."
It is believed that the previous system was being abused by some users who would enter and re-enter the car park several times or park illegally on nearby roads.
