Construction underway on East Midlands Airport Hotel
Work has begun on a £22 million four-star 216-bed hotel near East Midlands Airport.Developers Manchester Airports Group and Azure Properties will use several sustainable construction techniques to deliver an 87 per cent reduction in CO2 and hope it will become one of the greenest hotels in the region.
An on-site combined heat and power plant fuelled by plant oil will also be utilised by the hotel, which will export electricity to the national grid outside of normal occupancy hours.
Any waste heat generated will also be collected by the system in a thermal store, which will then be used to cool and heat the hotel.
When the Radission Blue is opened by summer 2011, the Azure Property Group will operate the hotel.
"This is the latest stage in our £50 million hotel development programme across our group and compliments both the growth plans of the airport and builds on our existing portfolio of 2,000 beds at our four UK airports," John Atkins, managing director, MAG Developments, said.
