New star shines in Chicago
Following hot on the heels of Connie Fishers success in the nationwide search for a new Maria to star in The Sound of Music, another of the shows finalists has landed the role of Roxie in the London production of Chicago.
Aoife Mulholland, from Galway on the West Coast of Ireland, will play the part of Roxie for a limited period from the 18th of December 2006. Aoife was one of the final four contestants to make it through to the BBC1's talent show "How do you solve a problem like Maria?, before losing out to Siobhan Dillon. The shows eventual winner Connie Fisher opened in The Sound of Music to much fanfare earlier this month.
Aoife will be in the esteemed company of another talent show favourite, Brenda Edwards from The X factor who plays Mama Morton, along with Ian Kelsey as Billy Flynn and Annette Mclaughlin who plays Velma Kelly.
Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who murders her lover then manages not only to avoid prison but uses the trial to propel herself to showbiz stardom along with another murderous chorus girl, Velma Kelly
The London production of Chicago recently celebrated it's ninth anniversary, after it's 1997 opening at the Adelphi and winning various awards it transferred earlier this year to the Cambridge theatre.Which was incidentally the very first London Theatre to stage the production back in the seventies!
