Heathrow Airport's Terminal 2 closes
Terminal 2 has officially closed at Heathrow Airport after 54 years of service, to allow for a major regeneration project.At a cost of £1 billion, the new terminal is expected to open for passengers in 2014.
Colin Matthews, chief executive at BAA, said: "The closure of Terminal 2 marks an important moment in the modernisation of Heathrow."
He added that passengers would have a better experience and there would be much less impact on the environment.
A number of airlines have relocated to Terminal 4 from Terminal 2 over the last few weeks, including members of the Star Alliance.
Lee Hock Lye, vice-president of products and services at the association, commented that the closure and redevelopment would be good for business.
The original terminal first opened in 1955.
It was Heathrow Airport's first terminal and has seen a number of celebrities pass through its gates including Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, Elizabeth Taylor, Gwyneth Paltrow and Frank Sinatra.
Heathrow Airport is the UK's busiest and largest travel hub.
