Celebrities and politicians gather at Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport gained publicity this week as a number of celebrities and politicians gathered at the London travel hub.Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg was joined by the poet Carol-Ann Duffy, Gavin and Stacey actress Alison Steadman and Richard Briers from the Good Life.
Heathrow Airport's writer-in-residence Alain de Botton was also at the gathering.
Earlier this year he spent a week at Heathrow Airport and spoke to passengers about their travel experiences in the hub.
The group planted an apple orchard on the site of an area that Heathrow Airport's proposed third runway will cover.
It was a protest against further expansion at the London travel hub.
Ms Steadman remarked that by planting the trees they were building a bridge between the past and the future and a barrier to the proposals.
"I'm sponsoring a tree in the orchard because I love airports and air travel, and recognise that if our society is to tolerate them, we are all going to have to learn to fly a lot less," Mr de Botton said.
His experiences at the airport have been published in a book.
