Edinburgh Airport's 'considerable transformation' on schedule
A £40 million project to upgrade Edinburgh Airport's terminal is progressing well. The 5,000 sq m development involves the construction of a security search area and improvements to passenger facilities, including a larger departure lounge and extra dining and retail outlets.
If the project runs to schedule, the first stage will be open to the public by November this year, with the whole scheme completed by 2011.
Scottish secretary Jim Murphy performed the topping out ceremony last week and Edinburgh Airport's managing director Gordon Dewar is delighted with how the "complex and challenging" development is progressing.
"Passengers will be able to enjoy the new look Edinburgh Airport within a matter of months. The transformation will be considerable," said Mr Dewar.
He added that the investment in the new facilities would help Edinburgh to compete with other regional airports in Europe.
More than eight million passengers a year use Edinburgh Airport and they can choose to fly to more than 100 destinations, after Ryanair opened ten new routes and Jet2 launched five new services in the past three months.
