Increase in airport passengers, says Monarch
Monarch airlines have released data that shows an increase in the number of passengers flying with the company from UK airports. It is believed that the re-introduction of flights to Menorca from Birmingham, Gatwick and Manchester airports, and Majorca from Luton, Birmingham and Manchester has contributed to the higher passenger numbers.
The launch of a new route to Larnaca from Birmingham, and the re-introduction of flights from the West Midlands city to Murcia are also credited for the larger number of people flying with Monarch.
In April 2009, there was a ten per cent increase in the number of flight passengers compared to the same month one year earlier.
Monarch flew 436,797 people to their holiday destinations in April 2009.
Birmingham International Airport was used by 9.6 million people last year, and there are plans to expand the runway to increase the number of flights and destinations from the airport.
In 2007, the airport began a £45 million extension to Terminal One - the biggest investment in the airport for more than 20 years.
