Laurence Olivier Awards for West End Hits

The prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane, played host to the 30th Annual Laurence Olivier awards. Theatre productions in general received plenty of plaudits, with one musical standing out above the rest, Billy Elliot took four awards out of the nine awards it was up for.

The show has been a hit on the West End stage since its adaptation from the film of the same name. The story centres on the prejudice experienced by a teenage boy from the North of England who wants to dance and how he fights back.

The musical has proved to be extremely popular with the general public. Backed by such luminaries as Sir Elton John, and renowned choreographer Peter Darling it comes as little surprise that Billy Elliot has been such a hit.

The spectacular musical picked up the Laurence Olivier awards for Best Sound Design, Best Theatre Choreography, with the Best Actor award being shared between James Lomas, George Maguire and Liam Mower, the award for Best Musical of 2006 also went to show.

Other awards on the night went to Guys and Dolls, which took the award for Outstanding Musical Production and the award for Best Actress, went to Jane Krakowski.

The awards are a great recognition of the talent and excellence on stage and in shows all over London’s famous West End.
