Low cost flights Pioneer Dies
Sir Freddie Laker, the pioneering aviation man who made transatlantic flights affordable to many people and who was widely acknowledged as the " father figure" of the modern day low cost carriers, has died at the age of 83.
During the seventies Sir Freddie, broke the vice like grip exercised by many of the flag holders on the lucrative transatlantic market, with the introduction of his SKYTRAIN concept, offering fares from under £ 60.00
Laker will forever be remembered as the orginal upstart who dared to take on the big boys, long before Mr Branson took over the mantle.
Sir Freddie found the lure of air travel irressitable and an attempt to re-create the skytrain model out of a base in the Bahamas, unfortunately failed in the nineties.
