Luton Airport Expansion
Major expansion plans for London Luton Airport have been unveiled this week, which include a new terminal building and second runway. The project has yet to be submitted to the government, but is expected to be completed by 2012 to ensure that everything is up and running ready for the London Olympics.
It is estimated that the Spanish owned airport will increase its passenger numbers to exceed 30million a year with over 600 daily flights by 2020 if the plans are approved.
Traditionally an airport for the low-cost airlines, the new improved London Luton Airport would be capable of handling large Boeing-747's and would have a monorail link with the nearby Luton Airport Parkway rail station
Locals opposed to the expansion have been voicing their concerns. Whilst many accept that the expansion would create a number of jobs surrounding Luton Airport, opposing arguments centre around the environmental impact of increased air traffic as well as an increase in the size of aircraft operating from the airport and the resulting noise.
