Airline launches green flights
Kiwi flagship carrier Air New Zealand will make history next month when it launches the world's first commercial test flight to run on the newest second generation biofuel technology. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft will leave Auckland on December 3rd, on a half-and-half combination of standard jet fuel and synthetic paraffinic kerosene made from jatropha oil.
Engine-maker Rolls-Royce needed to clear the new fuel before the flight could leave the ground to ensure the project could go ahead as scheduled.
Chris Lewis, a fuels specialist at Rolls-Royce, said: "Laboratory testing showed the final blend has excellent properties meeting - and in many cases exceeding - the stringent technical requirements for fuels used in civil and defence aircraft."
Air New Zealand flies to a wide range of destinations across the world including Heathrow Airport.
Stansted Airport recently announced that it is still the largest air travel hub in the UK to hold the ISO14001 certification for environmental management.
