Negotiations to end Transatlantic air travel restrictions begin in Brussels
Negotiations begin in Brussels this week to end the 28 year legislation which permits only 2 US and 2 UK airlines to operate routes between London Heathrow and the US. Currently, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate as the 2 UK carriers and American Airlines and United serve the American side.
There has been a mixed response to the negotiations with some airlines such as BMI believing that a reduction in industry restrictions would open up the market and increase competition, ultimately driving down prices to the customer.
On the other hand, Virgin Atlantic bosses believe that the only deal that should be negotiated is one that opens up the industry completely allowing European carriers to operate services within the US.
A conclusion to the negotiations is not expected to be reached this week however, a second round of negotiations is planned for November in Washington.
