Flight limit rises at Stansted Airport
It has been announced that Stansted Airport will see its current cap raised to 264,000 flights a year. The government has given the green light to an increase of 70,000 flights on the current maximum, which will see an extra ten million passengers use the airport each year.
This will place the facility among the busiest in Europe and comes shortly after a previous announcement confirmed that a public inquiry into the proposal for a second runway would commence in April.
Protest groups have criticised the decision, saying that local residents already find the level of aircraft noise extremely disturbing and an increase in the amount of air traffic would mark a further erosion of their quality of life.
However, Stansted Airport recently claimed that it has received fewer complaints about noise made by the hub's aircraft despite an increase in the number of planes using the gateway.
Stansted is currently the third busiest airport in the UK, flying to over 160 destinations in more than 40 countries each year.
