Lufthansa launches mobile boarding at Heathrow Airport

Lufthansa launches mobile boarding at Heathrow AirportPassengers leaving Heathrow Airport aboard a Lufthansa flight will be able to take advantage of a new mobile boarding system.

The new facility allows passengers to receive their boarding pass via email or text message direct to their mobile or smartphone, if they request to make use of the service.

Along with all the standard information, the electronic pass also features a barcode which can then be read by a handheld scanner used by airport staff, who can then allow the passengers to board their flight.

The system works in conjunction with the airline's online check-in system, which allows the process to be sped up as passengers can check in from 23 hours in advance over the internet.

A manual backup system is in place in case of signal coverage problems or if a passenger's mobile were to run out of power, for example.

If successful, the system will be rolled out at airports across Europe.
