East Midlands Airport goes green

East Midlands Airport goes greenEast Midlands Airport has announced it will try to generate a significant amount of its electricity from wind power, according to reports.

Wind turbines will be installed next year, as part of the hub's aim to generate ten per cent of its electricity from wind power and become carbon neutral by 2012.

East Midlands Airport recently won Airport of the Year at the TTG Travel Awards and has been recognised for its environmental awareness and green policies in the past.

Last week, staff at East Midlands Airport participated in Big Green Week, a programme of events focussing on the environment and making green choices.

Kelly McHugh of Big Green Week said: "The airport is working hard to make its ground operations carbon neutral by 2012."

The hub has also established a "roadmap of the sky" which directs aircraft away from highly polluted areas, with fines for carriers which allow their aircraft to deviate from the specified routes.

Any fines collected are then used to pay for the sound-proofing of homes within a three-mile radius of the airport.
