Strikes called off at Stansted Airport
Two proposed strikes by employees who operate luggage scanners at Stansted Airport in Essex have been called off, the GMB union has announced. Workers had threatened to conduct two four-hour strikes on Monday and Thursday following a protracted dispute over pay.
However GMB organiser Gary Pearce said the strikes have been suspended to "demonstrate good will in the hope that a new development may help solve the dispute".
The 34 workers, employed by Airfield Services, have staged strikes on two previous occasions and last month baggage handlers cancelled strike action at Stansted Airport after they were offered improved terms.
An airport spokesman said the previous action had not caused delays or cancellations of flights.
The union members have most recently been offered a two per cent pay rise, which they say is less than workers in other areas of the airport.
It is now hoped that the move will allow fresh talks to take place.
Employees of Swissport conducted strike action during a similar dispute in August this year after a three per cent pay increase was rejected.

Well, I hope they're happy now.! I have informed ALL my employees today that ANY of them that use Stanstead Airport for their travel arrangements will be disciplined. I, for One, will not be held to ransom by a greedy bunch of very poor self-serving morons like those employed there. I can only wish that many others cancel their usage of the airport , forcing it to close and put ALL the (mainly foreign) staff either in the Employment Exchange, or back in their own country. That will make them happy indeed...greedy bastards!!!! Oh, incidentally that will only be 200 people , but its a start.
