More passengers use Edinburgh Airport

More passengers use Edinburgh AirportEdinburgh Airport was pleased to announce healthy passenger numbers for last month despite the current economic climate, it has been reported.

Figures released showed that Edinburgh Airport remained Scotland's busiest hub handling 886,027 passengers, a decrease of one per cent on the previous year which has been blamed on the rising cost of living.

International passenger numbers rose by ten per cent at Edinburgh Airport which has been accredited to the Edinburgh Festival, while domestic traffic dropped 8.9 per cent and international charter traffic increased by 21.1 per cent.

A spokesman for BAA Scotland said: "It is encouraging to see growth in both international traffic and in the number of passengers booking overseas package holidays."

Edinburgh Airport's biggest rival Glasgow Airport saw 824,052 passengers, a fall of 5.2 per cent compared to last year's figures.

UK airports as a whole handled a total of 14.9 million passengers in August, a drop of 1.7 per cent on the same month last year.
