Manchester Airport guards against hooligans

Manchester Airport guards against hooligansExtra security measures will be introduced at Manchester Airport ahead of England's World Cup qualifiers, it has been reported.

Greater Manchester police have announced they will send plain clothes officers to Manchester Airport to stop passengers with banning orders from taking flights to Barcelona for Saturday's game against Andorra, or Zagreb for Wednesday night's fixture against Croatia.

Chief Inspector Alan Wood said: "Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known troublemakers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility presence at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation."

A football banning order prevents attendance at any regulated match for a period of between three and five years.

"Football banning orders are in place for a reason. They are there to stop people who are known troublemakers from going to football matches and behaving in an anti-social way," added Mr Wood.

Bristol Airport has said it will be working with Avon and Somerset police in the coming week to combat the threat of football hooliganism.
