Extra security at Manchester Airport
A new airport parking security scheme has been launched at Manchester Airport in a bid to tackle terrorism, it has been reported.Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at five sites around Manchester Airport to check for uninsured and stolen vehicles or those that have been involved in crime.
The airport parking system can scan 600,000 number plates every day and checks them against information stored on the police national database.
Peter Turner, Manchester Airport commander superintendent, said: "ANPR is unique in its ability to impact on crime at every level, from local volume crime through to cross border and organised crime and counter terrorism.
"These new camera sites will provide officers with an additional source of information during the early stages of investigations and will help in our fight against terrorism."
Around 160,000 passengers are expected to fly from Manchester Airport this bank holiday weekend making it the second busiest airport in the UK.
