Romantics opt for Mexico

Tourists looking for that ideal romantic break abroad should consider Mexico as it boasts attractive scenery and luxury hotels, claims a travel writer.

Lavish hotels are becoming increasingly popular with British couples who want to spend a romantic holiday in the sun, according to Alyson Cook, editor at Luxury Travel magazine.

A number of Hollywood stars visiting Mexico's resorts has also raised its profile as a desirable holiday location.

"Increasingly, I think Mexico is seen as a romantic destination for the UK luxury market. Mexico city has some hip hotels … which the A-listers like," said Ms Cook.

Holidaymakers can also participate in a variety of activities if they become tired of their luxury accommodation, according to Ms Cook.

"Its not just staying in a hotel, it's walks in the jungle, communing with the animals, going to climb the cultural pyramids," she added.

Research by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation revealed that 21.4 million people visited Mexico in 2006.
