KD Avia celebrates a year of UK flights
Russian airline KD Avia has celebrated the first anniversary of its inaugural flight into the UK by opening a new route to the city of Yekaterinburg. The city is one of the main stops on the famous trans-Siberian railway.
KD Avia's first flight to the UK landed at Gatwick Airport on June 16th and the airline now operates a daily service to its hub at Kaliningrad, offering connections to 12 cities in Russia.
Loretta Durell, KD Avia's UK sales manager, said Yekaterinburg is an important new destination and is popular with tourists owing to its museums, art galleries and theatres.
"However it is perhaps most famous as the place where the family of Nicholas II were executed in 1918," she added.
"It is also Russia's fifth largest city and has many business links to the UK."
People travelling from Gatwick with KD Avia can connect to cities including Moscow, St Petersburg, Kazan and Volgograd.

I am sometimes surprised how little attention the KD Avia development has received in the media in western Europe. With flights from not just Gatwick but a dozen other western and central European cities, Kaliningrad has evolved very quickly into a very useful gateway to Russia. I hope that some of those who fly though the new hub will take time to stop off and explore Kaliningrad. The city and its hinterland are full of interest.
