Birmingham celebrates record April

Birmingham celebrates record AprilBirmingham Airport has announced that it saw its busiest ever April this year, with 712,476 people passing through in the month.

Some 598,712 scheduled travellers and 113,764 charter customers used the airport's two terminals, smashing its previous record figure for April and exceeding last year's total by six per cent.

April was the third consecutive record-breaking month for Birmingham, with January and February also returning best-ever figures.

Flights to the Republic of Ireland were among the most popular with people using the airport hotels of Birmingham, with a 17.6 per cent increase in passenger numbers.

Growth on EU routes reached 10.9 per cent, while domestic services saw 5.3 per cent more travellers.

Joe Kelly, the acting managing director at Birmingham, said: "These figures represent even more good news for the airport and we are delighted that it is yet another record-breaking month.

"With new routes launched to Bergamo with bmibaby, Newquay with flybe and Girona and Pisa with Ryanair during April, passengers travelling from their local airport continue to have an ever-increasing range of destinations to choose from."
