More passengers through Durham in March
Durham Tees Valley Airport has released figures showing that passenger numbers increased by more than 16 per cent in March compared to the same month in 2007.More than 46,000 passengers took flights to and from the north-east airport last month, with low-cost carriers among the biggest contributors to growth.
Flyglobespan saw an increase in customers using its services to holiday destinations, with Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Lanzarote and Tenerife all proving popular.
Ryanair launched a new service to the Spanish province of Alicante in March, which was available from Durham Tees Valley alongside its established routes of Dublin and Barcelona Girona.
It was not only sunshine spots that attracted visitors in March, however, with more than 3,000 passengers using the Wizz Air service from the north-east airport to Warsaw in Poland.
Emma Ormerod, marketing and communications manager at Durham Tees Valley, said: "The airport continues to provide the local community with a range of destinations and services for both the business and leisure markets and there's no doubt the recent bad weather has helped to attract local passengers to choose to fly from Durham Tees Valley Airport.
"Airlines such as flyglobespan, Ryanair and Wizz Air are expected to provide the airport with significant growth over the coming year."
