New Maria a hit in Sound of Music
Summer Strallen, the new actress filling the role of Maria in The Sound of Music, proved a hit in her first performance at the London Palladium. She enjoyed a standing ovation from the crowd at the end of her gala appearance in the musical and glowing reviews from composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
"She was fantastic," he said. "We are very proud of her."
Strallen said: "You can't beat a standing ovation at the London Palladium in the Sound of Music. It was fantastic."
The 23-year-old took up the role of Maria after briefly appearing in Channel 4 teen soap Hollyoaks as an aspiring actress looking for her big break in the West End - an 'art imitating life' publicity stunt organised by Lloyd Webber.
Strallen said that they pursued the idea to plant her in Hollyoaks to get a new generation interested in the theatre.
She took over the role of Maria from Connie Fisher, who herself won the part after competing in a television talent show.
